Muesli: A Brief History

The word muesli is a Swiss-German variation of the German word “müs” meaning porridge and the diminutive suffix, “-li”. Originally known as Birchermüesli or simply Müesli, the word is an Alemannic diminutive of Mues which means "puree" or "mash-up." The “invention” of muesli is credited to Swiss physician and nutritional pioneer, Maximilian Bircher-Benner. 
A minimally-processed mix of whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and spices, muesli was first created at the turn of the 20th century by Maximilian Bircher-Benner as a healthful dietary supplement for his patients. Although it has grown to become a dietary staple and one of the most popular breakfast in the world.
Is Muesli Really A Healthy Meal Option?

When it was first developed, muesli was typically a dry cereal made from toasted whole oats, nuts, fruit and wheat flakes. Now, you can find many versions, including gluten-free muesli, fresh muesli (soaked overnight in water or fruit juice to soften), toasted or untoasted muesli, and its close cousin: granola. Depending on how the muesli is made, it's often more natural and contains less calories and sugar than granola, which usually has more added syrup to aid in the toasting.
